In Gaza, childhood is no longer defined by play, laughter, or growth—it’s defined by hunger.
As of July 2025, more than 320,000 children under the age of five in Gaza are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM)—the deadliest form of undernutrition. These children are not just hungry; they are starving. Their bodies are wasting away, their immune systems collapsing, and their futures fading.
đź’” A Crisis Beyond Numbers
In the past 24 hours alone, four Palestinians—including two children—died from famine and malnutrition. The total death toll from hunger-related causes has surpassed 190 children, and the numbers continue to climb. These are not statistics. These are sons and daughters, siblings and students, whose lives are being lost to a preventable tragedy.
đźš« Why Is This Happening?
The crisis is driven by:
-
Blockades and restricted humanitarian access, preventing food, medicine, and aid from reaching families.
-
Collapse of essential services, including water, sanitation, and healthcare.
-
Ongoing conflict and displacement, forcing families into overcrowded shelters with no food or clean water.
Even the few nutrition clinics that remain are overwhelmed. In July alone, 12,000 children were diagnosed with acute malnutrition, and over 2,500 were found to suffer from SAM. With fewer than 15% of nutrition services operational, the situation is spiraling.
🧒 The Faces of Famine
Three-year-old Ahmad Samir Abdel Aal died in Khan Yunis due to severe malnutrition. His body, like many others, showed signs of extreme wasting—a skeletal frame where a vibrant child once lived. Families are forced to risk their lives for a handful of food, often under dangerous and chaotic conditions.
đź’ˇ What Can Be Done?
This crisis is entirely preventable. Organizations like the Amna Foundation are working to deliver:
-
Multivitamins and fortified food packs
-
Hydration and electrolyte solutions
-
Nutrition education for caregivers
-
Mobile clinics and emergency feeding programs
But they need support. Time is running out.
