In the occupied West Bank, going to school is no longer a routine—it’s a risk. For thousands of Palestinian children, education is under siege from poverty, political instability, and a growing shortage of basic school supplies.

🚧 A Daily Struggle to Learn

Every morning, children in the West Bank navigate a maze of military checkpoints, roadblocks, and settler harassment just to reach their classrooms. In areas like Hebron and East Jerusalem, students face delays, intimidation, and even violence on their way to school. Once inside, the challenges continue: overcrowded classrooms, damaged facilities, and a lack of essential materials.

“Travelling to school is unsafe, and schools are frequently attacked or occupied for military purposes.” — Education Cannot Wait (ECW)

✏️ The School Supply Shortage

Due to funding cuts, restricted imports, and economic collapse, schools across the West Bank are facing a critical shortage of supplies:

  • Textbooks and learning materials are outdated or unavailable

  • Students lack basic items like notebooks, pencils, and backpacks

  • Teachers often buy supplies out of pocket or go without

In Area C, where Israeli control is most intense, schools are routinely denied permits for repairs or expansion. Some operate in tents or temporary shelters, vulnerable to demolition orders.

🧠 The Impact on Children

The lack of resources and safe learning environments has devastating consequences:

  • Lower academic performance

  • High dropout rates, especially among girls

  • Psychological trauma from exposure to violence and instability

  • Limited future opportunities, perpetuating cycles of poverty

“Unaddressed trauma negatively impacts educational outcomes and can cause developmental challenges.” — ECW Report on Palestine

🛠️ What’s Being Done?

Organizations like Education Cannot Wait, UNICEF, and local NGOs are working to:

  • Rebuild damaged schools and provide mobile classrooms

  • Train teachers in trauma-informed education

  • Distribute emergency school kits to vulnerable students

  • Advocate for safe access to education under international law

But the need far exceeds the resources available.
