In Gaza, childhood is under siege—not just from bombs and bullets, but from hunger, disease, and the collapse of every system meant to protect life.

As of August 2025, the health crisis facing children in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with malnutrition, dehydration, and preventable diseases claiming lives daily. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only 50% of hospitals and 38% of primary healthcare centers are partially functioning. Medical supplies have run dry, and the few remaining clinics are overwhelmed.

đź’” Children Dying Before Reaching Help

UNICEF reports that malnourished children are dying before they can reach hospitals. With 96% of households lacking clean water, infections are spreading rapidly. Diarrhea, hepatitis, and skin diseases are rampant. In July alone, over 12,000 children under five were diagnosed with acute malnutrition—the highest monthly figure ever recorded.

“It is not just hunger that is killing children—it’s the desperate search for food, the collapse of sanitation, and the absence of medical care.” — WHO Representative, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn

🧠 Long-Term Damage

Experts warn that even if aid arrives, the damage may be irreversible. Malnutrition during early childhood leads to:

  • Stunted growth

  • Impaired brain development

  • Weakened immune systems

  • Higher risk of complications during adulthood and pregnancy

Children like Taim, a 20-month-old boy in Gaza City, have not gained weight in eight months. His family survives on three pieces of bread a day.

đźš« Aid Blocked, Clinics Overwhelmed

Despite international pressure, aid remains a trickle. WHO has managed to deliver only one truckload of medical supplies since June. Gaza’s four specialized malnutrition treatment centers are operating beyond capacity, with fuel and medicine expected to run out within weeks.

🛑 The Numbers Are Grim

  • 212 deaths from malnutrition, including 98 children

  • Over 5,000 children admitted for treatment in July alone

  • One in five children under five in Gaza City is acutely malnourished

🙌 What Can Be Done?

Organizations like UNICEF, WHO, and the Amna Foundation are calling for:

  • Unrestricted humanitarian access

  • Emergency medical and nutrition supplies

  • Restoration of water and sanitation infrastructure

  • Protection of health workers and facilities
