In Gaza, water is no longer a basic right—it’s a daily struggle for survival.
As the world watches the devastating effects of famine unfold across the region, another silent killer is tightening its grip: a catastrophic water shortage. For the children of Gaza, the lack of clean water is just as deadly as hunger.
đźš± A Crisis of Contamination and Collapse
According to UNICEF, 96% of households in Gaza lack access to clean water, and children are surviving on as little as 1.5 to 2 liters per day—far below the emergency minimum of 15 liters needed for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The collapse of water infrastructure, compounded by fuel shortages and ongoing conflict, has left families relying on brackish, polluted sources that spread disease and accelerate dehydration.

🧒 The Human Toll
Children weakened by hunger are now facing diarrhea, hepatitis, skin infections, and respiratory illnesses due to unsafe water and unsanitary conditions. In shelters, there’s often one toilet for every 700 people, forcing families to resort to buckets or open defecation. Showers are nearly nonexistent, and hygiene is a luxury few can afford.
In Deir al-Balah, a young boy named Moaz walks miles each day to haul water for his family of 20. His mother, Umm Moaz, says, “The children keep wanting to drink. Who knows if tomorrow we will be able to fill up again?”
🧼 Disease Is Spreading
UNICEF reports a 20-fold increase in diarrhea cases among children under five, along with outbreaks of lice, scabies, chickenpox, and skin rashes. In some areas, poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples, putting thousands of children at risk of lifelong disability.
🛠️ What’s Being Done?
Humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to:
- Truck water to shelters and hospitals
- Install septic tanks and repair damaged infrastructure
- Distribute hygiene kits, chlorine tablets, and soap
- Advocate for unrestricted access to water equipment and supplies
But the need far exceeds the supply. With over 900,000 children affected, the crisis demands urgent global attention.
